Operation Debs – Part 2 – Makeup

When it comes to makeup for the debs, it can be hard to decide whether to get it done professionally or stick to a DIY job. Personally, I did mine myself at home but it’s completely up to the person themselves and how confident they are with makeup. If you are opting to get it done professionally, it’s a great idea to find images of looks you like, to show the MUA what exactly you’re looking for as it can be hard to explain without a visual in front of you. There are so many amazing makeup artists on Instagram that you can take inspiration from, my favourites being Blathnaid Murphy (blamurphy), Lisa Ralph (lisaralphmua) and Tara O’ Farrell (tara_makeup).

Alternatively, if you want be creative and go for the DIY approach, it’s equally important that you have a look in mind, as well as the right products to create it. Experiment with lots of different styles, palettes and products in the weeks coming up to the debs and if you’re not incredibly confident with makeup application, spend extra time practicing winged eyeliner, blending shadows and contouring. Here, I’ve recreated more or less the same, simplistic look I did on myself for my debs last year (my wings have come on considerably since then though, haha!)..

Once you have a look in mind, it’s time to tick your essential products off the list. Here are my top 5 must-have makeup buys that will make all the difference when creating your debs look..

Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray

mu1

I can’t stress enough how important a setting spray is for occasion makeup. It acts in the same way hairspray does, locking in your perfect finished look, all day and night without the need for retouching. There are a huge variety of setting sprays on the market at the moment but this one from Urban Decay is my personal favourite. Oil and paraben free, it won’t clog pores or cause breakouts and the temperature control technology means the product adapts to the climate, keeping your makeup look flawless regardless of whether the forecast predicts the harshest winds or baking sunshine. Retailing at €30, it’s not a bargain buy but 100% worth investing in. I purchased mine this time last year for my own debs and I still have 1/4 of a bottle left, despite using it most days that I wear makeup. However, if it is out of your price range, Penneys do their own version for just €2.50 that should see you through the day successfully.

Sleek i-Divine Palette in ‘Vintage Romance’

mu2

I’m a massive fan of Sleek, by far one of the best budget beauty brands out there. The i-Divine range of eyeshadow palettes have a huge variety of shades to choose from, my favourites being Sunset and Vintage Romance (above). What I love most is how vibrant and pigmented the shadows are, which is so important when creating a statement debs makeup look. This particular palette contains tones that will suit almost every skin and eye colour, ranging from jewel purples to shimmering bronzes. At just 10.49 each, they’re ideal for anyone thinking of doing DIY debs makeup. You’ll find them in most Boots and on Sleek’s own website (free shipping on all orders over 20 this weekend!)

Penneys Individual Lashes (30 pk)

mu3

At just 1.50, these lashes from good old Penneys really are a God send and seem far more expensive in terms of quality. I always opt for individual lashes when creating a glamorous look as they add volume without looking like spiders attached to your eyelids. For best results, wait 15-20 seconds to allow the glue to get tacky before applying, this ensures they’ll stay put throughout the night. If you’re a newbie when it comes to falsies, doing a trial run before the day of the debs is a good idea so you can get the hang of it and avoid unnecessary stress on the day.

Catrice Prime & Fine Smoothing Refiner

mu4

As primers go, this guy is my all time favourite and also the cheapest one I’ve used yet. When it comes to makeup, price and quality don’t always correlate, as proven by Benefit’s Porefessional, which I personally find dreadfully overpriced at €34, considering its quality is nothing special. A primer is key for smoothing over blemishes/spots and minimising the appearance of pores, essential when photographs are being taken left, right and centre, leaving your face like a beautiful blank canvas to start working on. Prior to makeup application, simply pat it on your skin using your finger tips, paying special attention to areas like your nose and chin wear pores are generally more noticeable. Catrice is available to purchase in most Penneys and a large selection of pharmacies nationwide. Prime & Fine comes in at in and around €5 – such a steal!

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion

eden

Although it’s not an essential, I think eyeshadow primer makes a massive difference to your makeup’s staying power and is worth the investment for occasions such as debs and weddings, where you want the look to stay perfect all day and into the night. I first discovered the UD Primer Potion when I received a sample with my Naked Smoky palette. I loved it so much I just had to invest in the full size product, there’s a few variations including one for mature skin. I chose this one, Eden, as it has a nude tint to it, making it suitable to wear without makeup for a natural look with ‘airbrushed’ lids. At 21 for the full size (10ml), it is a little pricey, but they also do a travel size version for 11 which is worth it if you’re just using it for the debs.

  1. This post was great! Really want to try the setting spray, it would come in handy for the night itself and nights out! I really want to give individual lashes a try, so I might give the Penneys ones a go,
